Why You Should Start a Gratitude Journal

Often in life we only focus on the negative. We ruminate over mistakes of the past, we think about things we haven’t achieved yet, or dream about owning more stuff and things. But how often do we just sit down and think about how many things in our life are already good?

By shifting our focus from what we lack to what we have and what we are grateful for, we can train our brains to think more positively. By having a more positive mindset, we are also likely to feel better and be happier! Sounds amazing, right? Well, let’s get started then!

The easiest way to become more aware of the positive things in our lives is to start keeping a gratitude journal. Studies have shown that gratitude journals can lower stress levels, increase wellbeing, and even decrease symptoms of depression.

Here are three tips to get you started:

  1. Make it easy and accessible – You don’t have to go out and buy a custom-made gratitude journal – although if that’s your thing, go for it! All you really need is a pen and paper, or just an app. Whatever you use, make sure it’s easily accessible.

  2. Make it personal – Whether you want to write down 5 things you’re grateful for every day or sit down once a week to write 5 pages reflecting on the positive things in your life, do what works best for you. Consistency is key, which brings us to...

  3. Make it into a habit – Whatever method you decide to use, and whether you write every day or twice a week – just make sure you make it into a habit. It may be helpful to have reminders for the first couple of weeks until it becomes routine.

Gratitude is like a muscle we can train. The more we start reflecting on positive things in our life, the more we start finding them. It can be difficult at first. You can start off with small things – how good was that coffee this morning? Try think of five small things you are grateful for today and go write them down in the gratitude journal feature of our app. Get started on training your brain today!
